Spicy hot and sour Fish Stew قلیه ماهی جنوبی Ghalieh Mahi

Ingredients:

  • 3 slices of  fish fillet (500 gr), (Tilapia, snapper, halibut, cod or any fish of your choice), I used Merluccius merluccius which is called “Heek” in Dutch
  • 3 bunches of coriander (You may add fresh or dried Fenugreek if you have some) all around 500 gr
  • One bulb Garlic
  • One onion
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose Flour
  • 2 tablespoons Tamarind paste
  • Turmeric, Salt and Black pepper ( and Red pepper)
  • cooking oil

Grind the onions in the blender, or grate them or cut the onion into small dice,

Grind the Garlic in the blender, or grate them or cut them into small dice,

Grind the coriander in the blender, or cut them into very small ,

Place them into the pan, add some oil,

stir fry the onions on medium heat until soft and golden,

Add the mashed garlic into the pan,

add more oil if needed,

add 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour,

stir and fry for 30 seconds,

add 2 teaspoons Turmeric and some Pepper (the amount of pepper depends on your personal taste),

add the coriander into the pan, continue to stir-fry for 2-3 minutes,

add oil if needed,

add 2 tablespoons Tamarind Paste (the amount of sourness depends on your personal taste),

pour 2 or 3 cups of water,

put the lid of the pan on,

 slow simmer the sauce for 30 minutes over low heat, let all the flavors combine,

clean the fish and remove the pin bones if there is any,

sprinkle some salt and pepper on both sides of the fish slices,

 then add them into the sauce,

again cover the pan, slow simmer aver low heat for around 45 minutes,
